Shallow?

I was walking out of school the other day and a saw a couple holding hands walking to a vehicle.   The young man was well kept (nice clothes, cleanly shaven, hair styled, and that sort of thing) and fit, the girl on the other hand had her hair unbrushed, her clothes were old and slightly worn (they did not fit her all that well) and they didnt match, and she was well over weight. I found myself thinking come on man, you could do so much better than that.   Now Im not the type a person who believes that you have to wear a size 5 or lower to be pretty by ANY means, but I do think that you, by you I mean everybody, have to put at least a little effort into your outward appearance.
I am aware that we live in a fairly shallow society and I try not to fall into the trap of being shallow.  This kind of stuff makes me wonder though, am I really like most other people?

  1. When you saw the person you thought hadn't "put effort" into her look, what qualities did you ascribe to her as a person? Did you assume that someone who is overweight is lazy or unkind?

  2. I did not assume that she was unkind by any means and I wouldnt say that just because someone is overweight they are lazy. It had nothing to do with how much she weighed. Had I seen someone who was skinny but was dressed in miss matched clothes with hair that was unkept and nothing about her seemed to be in and type of good condition then I would say they were lazy. Just because the person I saw happened to be overweight does not mean that I think all overweight people are lazy. There are too many factors that contribute to a persons weight, such as, diet, exersize, metabolism, and probably the biggest factor of, which no one has any real control over, is genetics.

  3. but it was that initial sight that you made your judgement on. in my honest opinion, im sure i would have done or said the same thing. we (society) put alot of emphasis on our first impressions, which in my case, are usually wrong.

  4. So, if you didn't think the person was lazy because she was overweight, why is her weight significant to your observation?

  5. I find myself thinking the same kind of things. It is not that I am judging them, it is more of I don't want to portray myself like that? I hear people all the time badmouthing people on appearences alone. What do you think your thoughts would be if the girls was dressed way better that the boy?

  6. I think its human nature to make judgments on people based upon appearance. What's important is that you later realized this, and are willing to examine your thought processes and admit to perhaps looking at people superficially.
